Vancouver General Contractors was retained to do a kitchen, bathroom and fireplace renovation in a one bedroom condominium in downtown Vancouver. Pros - VGC gave three estimates for good, better and best scenarios. The quoted price was actually the final price. - Very friendly and accommodating staff that listened to concerns and addressed them promptly - The project manager was excellent. He promptly returned calls and dealt with issues, including strata issues, himself. - When problems arose, solutions were found quickly, but only after consulting with me. - Trades people were skilled and pleasant to deal with. - It was helpful to have two designers to consult and share ideas with. They knew their materials and what was possible, and what was not. Cons - VGC charges a fairly substantial design fee before any estimate is given. This fee is non-refundable, so you are making a commitment before you see any numbers. - I would like to have seen a better break down of costs within the estimate. Some companies are very specific as to where the money is being spent. That being said, however, I felt in the end that VGC’s prices were competitive and that I received good value for the money. Also, I don’t know if I would have gotten the same kind of support from another company. Anyone undertaking a renovation should understand that it is a stressful and tiring process. Things happen and issues will arise. I can say that VGC made the process as easy as it could be, and that my project manager was very empathetic and understanding when I had concerns. If you are considering a renovation, I can recommend VGC. They want to deliver a good product and are constantly striving to improve on an already great service.
