We purchased a home where the original owners bought a fairly extensive alarm system with API. Many upgrades and multiple zones were purchased. When we purchased the home, it was agreed to in the purchase and sale agreement that the alarm equipment was owned outright by the existing owners and would transfer to us as part of the purchase price. Further it was agreed to in the agreement that there was no contract for alarm services. These were both confirmed prior to closing the transaction. After taking possession of the home we had an alarm industry profession (not API) visit our home. We were looking to work with his company given our prior business with them and happy service. The professional advised us that API entered a master code into the system and therefore locked out anyone but their techs from accessing the system. We contacted API who advised that the equipment was theirs and advised we either needed to sign a contract with them or return the equipment. We explained our due diligence with the equipment and they backed off of asking us to return it, however insisted they would not give us the master code and would only assist us if we entered into a contract with them. My ask of the company was very straight forward and easy to accommodate. Instead, they wanted to hold me over a barrel and try to force me to do business with them. This is a despicable practice, and others considering this company should be fully aware of what they are getting into before hand. My advice to you would be to stay clear of these guys.
