New floors and stairs - overbudget and late
We had a really frustrating experience working with flooring liquidators and strongly encourage anyone looking for flooring (especially installation) to go a different way as our project ended up being over budget, late, and eventually had to be finished by a third party. We were looking for flooring and installation (including stairs, railing, baseboards and door/window trims) at fairly short notice and were happy when flooring liquidators said they could meet our timelines so we went with them. The initial quote was reasonable. Turns out that quote didnt include several things we were looking for and that it underestimated the square footage of the job area (which raised the cost and delayed the project later). The stair railings, which at the time had a large gap right over the stairwell because we took out a wall, werent included (though in the quote there was a fee for railing removal and installation, which misled us). When we finally figured that out, we were told by Jonathan, our main contact, that he left them out because the quote was getting too high. This means that the initial quote, which we accepted, was kept artificially low and did not meet our requirements, since we absolutely needed railings. What also became clear was that their installer, who did a good job on the floors, was not particularly skilled when it came to the stairs. He couldnt answer any questions about what they would look like, how the baseboards would be incorporated, etc. Months beyond our initial deadline, we ended up cancelling all of the stair work and had to scramble to find others to do the job. The other workers said that the stair treads we were stuck with from flooring liquidators were of poor quality, some of which we did manage to return to the supplier but not all. Over the period of the work we were faced with many inconsistencies, delays, unclear communications, and new charges that would get added by surprise throughout the process as well. The window trims werent included in the order either, even though we asked for them from the outset (and door trims were included). When they added them, suddenly a garbage removal fee appeared that wasnt there initially (because the window trim apparently created too much garbage). We were told at one point that a delivery didnt happen just days before installation because they werent sure if we would be home, which would have been easily fixed by asking us. However, when we told them we were home, it became evident that the products had not even arrived at the warehouse in reality. This is just an example of several misleading interactions and communications that we received throughout the project. This all led to the project being over budget, late, and had to be finished by third parties. The whole relationship with the flooring liquidators sale staff and installers was quickly marred by a complete loss of trust and we found them to be completely unaccountable to their mistakes. I would strongly recommend to anyone to find different flooring retailers and installers as this was easily the worst experience we had in our entire home renovation.
