Our 2 tier deck was 17 years old, had significant heaving on one side and neeeded extensive repair or demolished and re-built. The deck was approximately 250 square feet on each level. We asked each of the 4 interviewed Deck companies to provide us with options on the deck, replacement/repair/design, and 2 came back with options that were standard and showed very little creativity. 1 other company suggested we simply cut the support beams to even out the deck and thus not address the source of the heaving at all. We were disappointed.
However, Frank from Decks R Us, provided us with several drawings that had different options but all were to remove current foundations and replace with sono tubes deep enough to ensure heaving would not occur again. Frank did not suggest a flagstone patio as others had suggested because he tested the foundation and determined that with the amount of water retention we had,the stones would have significant movement and cracking and shifting would occur in a season or two. Frank provided us with even more options when he discussed the original drawings with us, of which ultimately saved us hundreds of dollars but added more esthetic beauty to the backyard. At that point we knew we had the right company as he spent hours with us discussing the project. Frank and his crew took down the deck the day after he received the go ahead and our initial deposit on the estimate. Work progressed at a steady pace but we were not in any hurry so the weather interruptions did not bother us. Frank kept us abreast of the planning and when they would be back out. Decks R Us are very responsive and Frank will always return a call. After the crew had torn down the old deck he asked if he could redesign our stairs to make them more suitable to the layout of the backyard, we could not have been happier with the redesign as it adds alot more character rather than your straight down staircase. After the design was settled Frank gave us a call one day and stated that he had an option for us that he thought we should consider. Frank sourced Cedar planks cheaper than the pressure treated and wanted to include this and an option for an expanded sunning area on the bottom deck. This would be at no extra cost and we were blown away!!
The project was completed with the utmost of care, professionalism and quality and we could not be more satisfied with our incredible new addition to the house.
