It is with regret that I write this review regarding my experience with Troy Moving. I am writing this review in the hopes that many others looking to move might be spared cost and grief. I have learned a very valuable and expensive lesson in dealing with Troy Moving. I had so hoped to have a good experience with my son’s move. I have come to the conclusion that your move will either go very, very well or very, very bad! Seems to be no in between with Troy Moving. I too had done my research. Received multiple quotes and read multiple reviews. I decided to go with Troy Moving Company based on the majority of their reviews. They were by far not the cheapest in the quote that I was given. However, as my son was moving back home from Lethbridge, Alberta to Cambridge, Ontario with myself not being able to be there to help him, it was important that I have a “trustworthy” company handle the move. I was given a quote for $1030.00 pre tax based on the information that I had given Troy Moving and their assessment of a 1 bedroom apartment. This move was planned and booked well in advance. The movers came to my son’s apartment a day early, March 28 2012. They had called to ask if they could come and he explained to them that he was not ready as they were not scheduled to come until the next day. The movers told him that they just wanted to come and take a look at what all needed to be moved. They showed up several hours later at approximately 6:30 p.m. and started moving the large items out of my son’s apartment. My son called me frantic that the movers were moving his belongings. I spoke to the movers multiple times on my sons cell phone, asking them to at least give him 2 hours to pack some items and then come back. The movers told me over and over that if they couldn’t move him NOW, they would leave and he would have to find someone else. I contacted Troy Moving and left several messages with no one returning my call. The movers left at 9 p.m. that night and came back to my son’s apartment at 10 p.m. that same evening. The movers then stayed until 3 a.m. and returned to resume packing at 6 :30 a.m. The movers kept telling me that they would help pack my sons belongings and this would be free of charge as they had come a day early. My son had a very expensive custom made glass fish tank which the movers would not allow him to finish emptying, thus moving it with live rock and sand. Upon lifting the fish tank off the stand in my sons apartment, the movers promptly dropped the tank on the floor, breaking the tank. I called Troy Moving to voice my concern regarding the movers dropping and breaking the tank. To this day, Sofia insists the tank was not broken. The tank is indeed broken. As a result of the movers coming a day earlier my son had to pack his exotic fish overnight to be sent the next morning by courier to Ontario, rather than pack them the morning of the date the move was booked for. Thousands of dollars worth of fish arrived dead. We were now having to pay for moving a broken fish tank along with all the paraphernalia for the fish that no longer were!! The final cost of the move was now $4387.79. We also found out after the move, that the move in Lethbridge had been done by Vega Line Moving, which was not made known to us during our communication with Troy Moving. Upon reading the previous reviews from Troy Moving, I see that this is not the first time that there have been issues with Troy Moving delegating the move to Vega Moving with very poor results. I had spoken multiple times to Sofia, as has my eldest son who is a police officer. The conversations quickly took on a “he said, she said” communication style. After several emails and phone calls to Sophia from both myself and my son, Sofia gave my eldest son a verbal quote of the new cost of the move, $3768.55. This was what she was willing to do to satisfy our multiple concerns, although not once has Sofia addressed or acknowledged any of our concerns or issues with the move or the delay. In the end, the move did not take 5 – 7 days as promised, but instead took 8 weeks and delivery was made May 22. I believe the items were in storage in Toronto for a week to a week and a half. Upon telling Sophia that I would be writing a detailed review, she immediately informed me that the cost of the move would be $4243.15 if I wrote a review. Sofia told my son that if I would agree not to write a review that she would agree to the lower quote that she had previously given him. My son told Sophia that she was dealing with some of the most honest people that she could hope to deal with. I will let Sophia's email to me speak for themselves, “If you would like to rectify this situation and offer a discount as a final claim discount without taking this any further I would be happy to see what I can do about offering further discount to the move above and beyond the discount that was offered today.”
“If you are willing to accept a discount on the move as a final claim and settlement offer and are willing to sing to that respect, I would be happy to offer you further discount. We are an honest company that takes care of our customers. Therefore, I would like to settle on an amount in exchange for your agreement. Please consider this and email me back so that I can prepare everything before delivery takes place tomorrow.”
These emails from Sophia to myself concern me greatly. I would even question if this is legal. I explained to Sophia that it was important for me to remain honest and therefore it would go against my conscience to do as she suggested. Sophia’s emails lead me to question the credibility and the integrity of Troy Moving Company. If I had been aware beforehand that this is how Troy Moving operates it would definitely have deterred me from doing business with such an unscrupulous company. As I told Sophia, we too have our own business and honesty is as honesty does. One chooses how one wishes to run their business. We choose to remain honest. We are people of our word. Our clients can trust us. We treat others as we ourselves wish to be treated. As a result, we have the same expectations of others whom we deal with.
I fully expect some follow up “company response” in regards to my review, as is to be noted in the previous reviews of Troy Moving. To be sure, I had shared the fact that I at least had expected an acknowledgement of our concerns, perhaps an apology. Not so. No accountability was acknowledged on the part of Troy Moving Company for any of our concerns. I am very disappointed in the communication with Sofia and I feel that the threat and follow up change in the cost of the move does not do Troy Moving justice. In the end I chose to pay the final amount given to me by Sophia of $4243.15 and write an honest review, rather than save myself $619.24 and have others go through the stress and heartache that we went through. I wish with all my heart that I had read a review such as this before I decided to hire Troy Moving Company.
