New Roof and Eavestrough

Well, this spring had to be one of the worst ones to have to have a roof replaced! Jason got it done as soon as he could and in the meantime had put a protective membrane over the leak in the dining room ceiling! All this because of raccoons and I had called him in a panic! Jason told me right off he wasnt going to be the cheapest quote but you get what you pay for! I am really happy with this company and Jason is the best at customer service. He does a thorough inspection after the job and makes sure the customer is satisfied!

Thank you Sandra for the kind response. Raccoons can and do a lot of roof damage to older roofs as they search out areas for breeding. I'm confident in the new solutions that we employed there. Have a great summer. Cheers.

Flat roof job done right.

Jason did a fantastic job on our 2 level flat roof. Our roof was designed badly with no slope. Jason's carpenter was able to add an 8 inch slop on a 60' roof on the 3rd story of our Townhouse. Similarly they added a slope on the 2nd level patio/roof.

Now i don't have to worry about my roof. Job well done. Pricey but I am happy.

Thank you AJ. We appreciate your business. You and your wife were lovely people to work for. Unfortunately the builder did not install a slope to your flat which shortened the life expectancy of the membrane. You should get many good years out of this new design. All the best. Jason Hunter

Put new Shingles & two new skylights on house

While doing a kitchen reno, roof leaks were discovered. We needed a new roof immediately before the reno continued. Jason Hunter, the owner of Canadian Roofing responded immediately to us. He directed us where to look at shingles to pick a color, recommended an ice shield membrane on entire low slope roof and completed the installation in two days. His 7 man team did an excellent job and were good to deal with. Jason came by a week later to check the installation and ensure we were happy with the work. I would highly recommend Jason and his company.

roof replacement

I didn't have a great experience. There was a disconnect between the conversation with the guys doing the work and Jason who controls the cost. We paid a lot of money for our new roof, and our dormers weren't completed and are falling apart and our roof is still pooling water. I regret not going with the more expensive quote from another company that would have solved these problems. Everyone at the company was very polite, nice and articulate, but I can't help but feel like after spending all this money, that we still have a lot of problems with the roof.

Company Response

Hello Rayne and Domenic. I hope this response finds you well. I regret that you feel that there was a disconnect between us as I really went out of my way to discuss every detail of your 100 year old home that had 4 layers of original roofing on it with your husband as well as list all aspects of your estimated scope of work on our contract before we started the job in a very detailed form including the high probability of extra carpentry and structural work that may have be needed. I too shared in being frustrated as well. We take great pride in educating our clients with proper building code compliant procedures and protocols but we are at the mercy of the home owners budget and as so try our best to find price friendly options to save money where we can and to work with property owners in a positive way. To recap the events that took place, I was asked to come and provide a flat roof quote by your husband in the late fall of 2016 which was a pleasure considering we worked together on your lower second floor flat roof previously and all went well. While I was there at your home discussing the work I advised Domenic to please do not do any finish ceiling work other than the demo and clean up until the flat roof was torn off so we could determine if structural carpentry work was needed on top and possibly do the extra work as well and not displace the new interior finish work. I also advised that in order to get more head room that rebuilding and going up two ft higher would be a nice option but much more costly and that would solve the low ceiling issues as well as provide a deeper cavity for thicker amounts of insulation. That option was denied due to costs. As you know your old ceiling was sagging in certain areas which is a tell tale sign of underlying issues and I mentioned that an engineer may have to be brought in if major reinforcing or rebuilding was required plus permits would also be needed from the City of Toronto. I was advised that your father was helping out on site and that he was a professional engineer as well. I was a little surprised that when the ceilings were removed and framing and beams exposed that they were not dealt with then by others as Canadian Roofing Company didn't arrive until a month later. With the winter weather being unstable we waited until March to start the job as finding 3 consecutive days of dry weather was challenging. The first day we started we tore off the flat roofing materials down to the original roof decking which was over 3.5" thick. At that point we confirmed that the roof had indeed sunken in in the middle and that extra framing work was needed to create a 1% slope to effectively dry the roof off and provide stability. I was instructed by my foreman who has over 20 years experience of the extra work and costs. He too also discussed the extra framing work with your husband Domenic while on site and gave him a break down of what was needed. We also discovered by going inside your home that the ceilings had all been finished which we advised against earlier and that the only way extra framing or beam support could happen now would be to remove your new finished work to access these areas. Once hearing this, I immediately called and advised your husband what we believed the right thing to do was and extra costs associated with that. We tarped and secured the roof and allowed you guys time to discuss budget options. We again were instructed that it was not in the budget to re frame the roof and to carry on with the original quoted job which we did. We advised that there may be a ponding water in a few areas of the flat roof as a result of the sagging but we would try and adjust and shim up the ridgid insulation to minimize this at no extra costs. This helped but was not a perfect solution. We also discovered that the brick parapet walls were quite poor once old roofing was removed and needed masonry work which would have added extra $2500 plus to the job but we opted to wrap the walls in plywood to support them as this provided a more budget friendly option to save money. Once all work was completed we met for a walk through and a discussion which was approximately 2 1/2 weeks later and you expressed your concerns over a nominal amount of water on the flat roof plus rear dormers that were not part of the original contract and a eaves trough that was pulling away on the front of your house which was also not part of our contract. As good will gesture I took it upon myself to clean out your eaves troughs, renail and secure them and sweep your lower roof of your extra demolition debris. I also offered to do the smaller rear dormer flat roofs for free but also added that they needed carpentry and rebuilding as they had structural issues as well and that although I'd do the roofing for free the carpentry, insulation and aluminum trim would be extra. Again this was not part of my contract. As an acting manager of Canadian Roofing Company it is my duty and responsibility to to make sure clients are informed of all the steps along the way and that we conclude our business dealings in a positive way. I feel I went above and beyond in discussing the work details and want to conclude by saying my offer still stands at doing those dormer roofs for you at no extra costs. Thank you and all the best Canadian Roofing Company Ltd.

Residential Flat Roof

After using Canadian roofing to re-shingle our main roof a couple of years ago, we immediately called them back when it was time to replace the flat roof membrane over our kitchen. As before, Darren gave us a detailed explanation of the work that needed doing, and a detailed quote. The work proceeded precisely as described, and was done in a day. Both Darren and the crew were a pleasure to work with at all times. Highly recommended!

Roof

I first saw this company's work across from the school where I work. I was impressed with their professionalism and hard work. I asked the homeowner at the end of the day if he would recommend the company and he said "absolutely yes". I talked to one of the workers as they were meticulously cleaning up and grabbed their card for future reference. Sure enough, 6 months later, I needed half my rood replaced, along with replacing an old, leaking skylight. I got a a few quotes and Canadian Roofing was not the cheapest, and not the most expensive (just as the worker had told me), but they had by far the best customer service. Jason was busy when I called the number and he passed on his brother's number who grabbed my info and came to my house at my convenience. He was professional, polite and with no sense of smarmy salesmanship that I sensed from the other companies reps. He had the brochures and info for all the materials he would use so I could check the materials price myself. The shingles were top of the line, the skylight matched the prices I had already researched. This left a decent profit for a family run company, with me the customer not feeling upset at what I was paying for a good quality job. That was indeed what I got. A very good quality job at a fair price for both the company and myself. The skylight looks fantastic! Darren even put a tarp on the leaking skylight so there would be no further damage before his crew could fix out roof. Their cleanup was perfect too! All in all, I recommend their work, and indeed grabbed their business cards to pass along to friends, families and neighbours. Good Job, boys

High quality work and good communication

We hired Jason to do our roof in December 2016. The initial quote was $15,000 provided the roof was in good shape when the shingles came off. The roof was not in good shape. There were four layers of shingle (instead of two which is code), the roof had no insulation at all and was re-insulated, the beams and boards were rotten (which explains the leak that started it all) and had to be replaced, the sloped roof had to be re-sloped to stop pooling, and there were two custom skylights that had to be replaced, as well a vents installed, soffet, fascia and eavestroughs redone. Jason called us and explained everything that had to be done, with photos and a revised quote of $28,000. The work went ahead. We hired Peter Yeates our trusty home inspector to review the work and sign off in the end since we do not know anything about roofs. Peter said the work was very well done and flagged one minor issue about an eavestrough. Jason dealt with that to our satisfaction and we are happy.

Hello Katheryne and thank you for the kind words and for your business. When we do our inspections, it is challenging in exactly determining the condition of a 100 year old roof structure that has multiple layers of roofing material and that contravenes building codes. We make every reasonable effort to deal with certain unknowns but some roofs require a major over hall and unfortunately yours was one of them. From carpentry work on the flat roof, rebuilding and re-sloping of overhangs, insulating the entire roof structure, new skylights and aluminum to overhangs of eaves, etc. I want to thank you for your commitment in doing the job right and in compliance with the Building Code. I am confident that you will notice a reduction in your energy costs now that the roof is properly insulated and waterproofed. All the best in the future. Jason Hunter Canadian Roofing Company Ltd.

New Roof in Etobicoke, late 2016

Our roof was very old and really needed to be re-done. We reached out to a few companies in the fall of 2016. It took Canadian Roofing Company longer than the others to get back to us. We got an estimate which was actually more expensive than the others, but their reviews were great and we were told they could do it in only one day. Our house is a 1300 sq. ft. bungalow. We signed the contract in mid-October, and had our roof done on December 6th. I gather the company was busy with last-minute customers like us, and it was difficult to get a hold of them to get our date confirmed. They had 8 workers remove the shingles, install new vents, and re-roof our house in less than a day. They did a good job cleaning up, and generally we are very happy with the job they did.

Hello Mike and thank you for the kind words. Unfortunately in our weather dependent business our schedules can change from week to week. The last quarter of every year is historically the busiest time for us. Kids are back to school, cottages are closing and everyone wants to get work done while the weather is okay. I also wanted to compliment you on the colour of shingle you chose. The house turned out great. Let me know when you are ready to tackle the eavestroughs.
All the best in the spring. Jason Hunter - Canadian Roofing Company Ltd.
