Great Post-Reno & Regular Cleaning

Hire a Maid has been doing our regular house cleaning for a number of years, but we weren't aware that they did post-reno cleaning, too, until it became absolutely necessary. We recently went through a reno that took longer than planned (which was expected) and resulted in a layer of dust covering rooms (and almost everything in them) on almost every floor of our house (which was not expected. Dust even managed to get into things we'd carefully wrapped in plastic.). The prospect of cleaning it was overwhelming.

After weeks of disruption the work was finally done and we were able to get Hire a Maid in for a super-thorough cleaning. Not having had them do this kind of job for us before, we did not anticipate just how thorough they would be. It was so hard to picture what our house would look like clean again, so we weren't expecting every crystal on every light fixture to have been polished, paint splashes eradicated entirely, and not a speck of dust to be found. But that is exactly what we came home to. Hire a Maid also cleaned inside the fridge and inside drawers and cabinets so that they looked almost the same as they did when they were first installed. The list of what had to be done was just so long it was hard to believe they could have been so thorough in just one day.

We recommend Hire a Maid for routine cleaning all the time, but now we can recommend them for post-reno, too. We'd been so overwhelmed trying to figure out how to tackle it all and they just picked up that worry and removed it for us. And for a price that was just slightly more than half of what we had paid a different company for a previous post-reno clean. Even at a higher price we would consider it money well spent.

Company Response

Hi Suzanne and Brad, thank you for your wonderful review of our post-renovation and regular maintenance services! We have done thousands of deep cleanings since 2008 and last year expanded to include post-renovation cleanings. We were especially happy to be in a position to provide your home this specialized cleaning -- it has been a great pleasure having you as a regular client, and I know firsthand how stressful it is dealing with post-reno dust. You are absolutely right that our cost is lower than the competition offering comparable meticulous quality post-renovation cleanings. Our cleaning teams are trained to work systematically in a highly organized manner, and the benefit of this efficiency and time savings is passed along to our clients through lower pricing. If you’ve been home while our staff clean, you’ve also seen that they are very hardworking, don’t waste any time and go the extra mile to provide an excellent quality cleaning. We look forward to many more years of serving you! Thanks again :-) Carol

Dependable house cleaning

These guys clean everything! Their best work is the kitchen and bathrooms, they work hard when they are here and they are willing adapt to my schedule when I ask them to. If that isn't enough to recommend them, they always follow up on my feedback and Tammy laughs at my jokes and asks about my kids. They are perfect because whenever I've had a concern Tammy has worked to sort it out to my satisfaction. They have been cleaning my house for 3 years. I wish I could get this kind of service from more of the companies I work with!

Hi Romina! Thank you for your very kind words!! We truly value and appreciate having you as a client. It brightens our day to know that you love our work and the service we provide in your home and through our office with Tammy. Tammy mentioned that you will be looking for a post-renovation cleaning soon. I thought you might like to see what's included in our reno cleaning service. Here is the link to our website -- it is extremely detailed (as you know, reno dust gets everywhere!) and can be customized to what you will need: https://hireamaid.ca/our-services-post-renovation.php - Thanks again! Love the entire Hire a Maid team!

I cannot say how much I love the entire team at Hire a Maid!

From my first call with Tammy I felt like I had immediately made a new friend, I now look forward to her calling to schedule our next visit. And I cannot tell you how amazing our team of ladies are, they are always a delight to have in our home and work their attention to detail is out of this world.

Life is busy, having Hire a Maid come to clean our home once a month has made a world of a difference. And I love that we are able to support a local business. I would highly recommend the Hire a Maid to anyone looking for an amazing home cleaning service, you will not be disappointed!

Decent clean, lousy service

I had a relatively easy time scheduling Hire a Maid for a deep cleaning with the intention of getting them ongoing, if they did a nice enough job. Three of them came and spent 2 hours in my 850 sq ft. townhouse. It was clean, but not spotless, and it costed me $240 or so for six hours of work. This seems like a lot of time to clean such a small space, in my opinion. And on their way out, I noticed that they'd not mopped the hardwood floor in my living room. They did it after I mentioned it, but you'd think I wouldn't have had to ask. Anyway, when prompted for feedback, I gave it and it wasn't super-positive, but it also wasn't at all rude.

In a couple of weeks, I decided to give them another go because elements of my house were cleaned very well (the girl that did the kitchen did an exceptional job). When I got a note back from Tammy, it was terse and said something like "We aren't available on that day", to which I replied "Do you want to offer some alternate days?". She then replied "I'll look at the schedule" and I've not heard back since.

So ... that's it for these guys. Tammy's attitude over email coupled with the negative parts of the overpriced cleaning are enough to say "no thanks" to Hire a Maid.

EDIT: I made two edits to follow-up on Carol's response below. I knew it was 3 people for 2 hours but made a typo; the dollar amount reflected the correct time, so that was just an honest mistake. And upon looking at my emails further, I was incorrect that there was a delay in getting back to me. They actually responded the following business day, which is absolutely fair. One more thing to add is that Carol called me last week to threaten legal action if this review wasn't removed. I don't intend to remove it since I believe in user reviews being a valuable resource in this day and age; however, I wanted to correct the two errors I made in my recounting of the events to make sure the review is 100% accurate.

Company Response

Hi Jon, I would first like to apologize that we had not gotten back to you. I understand how this feels, having contacted companies myself with excellent reviews for services and their not returning calls or emails. It is frustrating and is not how we want people to feel when dealing with us.

As a point of clarification, I would like to confirm the initial cleaning of your home on Dec 11th actually took three staff only 2 hours to complete, not 3 hours as noted in your review, for a total of 6 labour hours. (Your Dec 30th email refers to this 6 hours, and that is what is shown on the detailed receipt we provided.)

Your review says that it took a while to get a response to your initial request to resume service; however, there was not in fact any delay by us. We cleaned your home on Dec 11th, you replied to our requests for feedback on Dec 30 th (19 days after the cleaning) saying that you were looking into other agencies and would not be continuing, and then on Jan 22nd (42 days after our cleaning), you emailed us saying that our cleaning “held up quite well” and you had changed your mind and wanted to use our service again.

Unfortunately, the space we had been holding for you had been taken and there was no longer short term availability. I personally called you back promptly the same day (verified with my cell phone record) to let you know this, and I also followed up with an email the next business day confirming that we did not have availability. It was then necessary for my Manager to work through the schedule to determine when there might next be an opening. This took time and unfortunately, we dropped the ball on calling you back. I know you feel that the email exchange with her came across as abrupt as the emails were succinct. This was certainly not her intention to make you feel this way. And for this, we apologize. Carol Smith, Owner.

FOLLOW-UP TO REVIEWER EDITS: Dear Jon, the reputation of our company matters to us and is what drives us each day. Our goal is to be perfect; however, if ever we do make a mistake, we learn from it. We also know that the review system is now a fabric of our society that can publicly call a company out when a mistake is made. There is, however, a great onus on the reviewer to ensure the accuracy of the information presented, in particular that it not include false or misleading statements, whether intended or not. Thank you for making the corrections to your review.

Home cleaning services

After announcing to my husband that I will no longer clean the house, the pressure was on to find a company. I'm so thankful for having had a such a positive first experience. The cleaning staff was super efficient, accurate, personable and respectful. Their was a pleasant teamwork in my space, and they left my house looking like a "shining castle". Management follow up with a phone call. They responded very well to constructive feedback and I have booked my follow-up appointment. I look forward to a lasting work relationship with HireaMaid.

(thank you for that :-) I am so glad that you reclaimed your free time by allowing us to clean your home and that you are happy with the team's work. We sincerely appreciate your feedback! House Cleaning

We have been using Hire a Maid for the past 2-months and we couldn't be happier with the service! I initially contacted them to help prepare our home for sale. They did an amazing job to help set the stage for our house listing but also helped to keep it looking perfect during showings while we were using the house.
I can't say enough positive things about Tammy and her team. We have since brought Hire a Maid to our new home and I look forward to working with them for years to come.
Thanks so much ladies for helping me and my family enjoy our home!

Regular cleaning

I used Hire A Maid for over a year. The first cleaning wasn't done well but they were responded to feedback and returned to complete the job. They are best at one-time cleaning or cleaning as needed --- for regularly scheduled cleanings, the team is always different and some things get forgotten from week to week, the work was not consistent and towards the end, they would forget to turn off lights, bathroom fan, etc. Once they forgot to lock the door. When I realized I could not longer depend on them to get even the basics right (e.g., please turn off the lights when you leave), it was time to cancel. I am back to an individual cleaner - the price is about the same and she remembers what to do from week to week and she is even willing to do things like organize, tidy up a bit even though I didn't request it. Hire A Maid would never do anything over and above what was requested.

Company Response

Dear Linda,

Our success and growth to 3 locations and almost 50 employees in 7 years has been thanks to our predominantly regular clientele. Indeed, since 2008, we have performed close to 50,000 regular cleanings (not a typo, we really have done nearly fifty thousand cleanings!) and, in the last year alone, we did more than 9,000 cleanings. While we haven’t been proactive in asking our clients to give their feedback on Homestars (we need to work on this!), we do leave behind a quality feedback card each visit, and we have hundreds of these returned cards with amazing feedback from our regular clientele. Frankly, we believe that we have THE BEST customers, and we love receiving their feedback – whether it is that they are over the moon happy with our work, or want to request we make a change to best suit their needs, we take it to heart and act upon it to keep them as satisfied regular clients.

We regret that you did not contact us before posting this review to give us the opportunity to address your concerns. Everyone has tried very hard to make you happy, but it seems that was not possible at this time.

I would like to address the other points you mention. It is in everyone’s best interest to send the same team: the staff become familiar with the nuances of the home and become more efficient, and – most importantly -- that is what our clients want. Josie’s team has been your regular crew for close to a year now and Josie herself has not missed a single day of work in this time (we all wish we had her immune system!), so we are not sure what is meant by team changes. Perhaps you are referring to the change in her team mate when we moved to the new Keele office (Eugenia lived too far from it and chose to not continue) or when her new team mate was ill?

With respect to locking the door, security is extremely important to us. In your June 2014 email about this occurring, you admitted that your lock can be tricky. To prevent this from happening in the future, we successfully implemented a two-person locked door check procedure.

You also mentioned that lights were left on. It is absolutely important that a home be left in the manner in which we found it – minus the dust and dirt of course! We have received only one communication from you about this, which was immediately addressed with the team. We were unaware of any further instance. Your review mentions that problems occurred from “week to week”, but you were actually a monthly client.

We are glad that you have found someone who takes care of the extras for you. As a cleaning lady, it is likely that she is charging you an hourly rate that is lower because she is not paying into WSIB, CPP, EI and possibly income taxes (the norm with most independent cleaners), which, if your total cost is the same, means that she is allocating more time to your home to allow for doing extra work. We could certainly have done this for you as well -- we customize our services to what our clients tell us they want, but we are unfortunately just learning of this want through your review. To give credit where it is due, the staff went above and beyond their job duties this summer when they watered your garden while you were away.

We wish you all the best in the maintenance of your home. Thank you, Carol Smith.

Prior to creating Hire A Maid, Carol held the position of Director, Fixed Term Investment Products for CIBC and before this, she managed heating and cooling services and plans for Enbridge Home Services.

Carol’s 10-plus years of experience managing and launching successful products for large corporations and her own experience as a user of house cleaning services before founding Hire A Maid have given her company a leg up in the cleaning industry. Her extensive experience in managing and motivating staff, her highly organized approach and her customer service orientation have proven to be key ingredients in Hire A Maid's rapid success.

Carol is passionate about house cleaning and the difference her staff make in their clients' lives. "We're not just cleaning homes; we're freeing our clients of the countless hours spent on housework (or stressing about it!). It gives our clients more time to enjoy with family, friends or simply relaxing. And, it gives us a wonderful feeling of satisfaction knowing that we can make a big difference by giving our clients more time and less stress."

What differentiates Hire A Maid from other maid services is:

• A high level of professionalism. We’ve been told many times by clients that our office and cleaning staff are very professional. For many homeowners, entrusting their home to a house cleaner (someone they don’t know) is a big deal. At Hire A Maid, we want our clients to feel comfortable that they have chosen a company that is well-organized, customer service oriented and that will do its best to meet their needs and to protect their interests. Hire A Maid also has general liability insurance, pays into Workers’ Compensation Insurance and remits all government taxes. – Operating honestly and ethically is the foundation of our company.

• A focus on hiring and retaining excellent employees. All of our new employees undergo a comprehensive training program that is followed up with ongoing support to provide them the knowledge and skills to be effective at their jobs. We strive for high employee satisfaction and believe that this leads to a culture where our staff go the extra mile for our clients. Our excellent employee retention record also allows us to provide our clients with the consistency of having the same maids every visit.

• Performing “the details” on every cleaning truly is Hire A Maid’s specialty.

• We actively seek out your feedback and we guarantee our work. We want you to be absolutely satisfied with our work and we invite you to complete our quality feedback survey after every visit to tell us how we’re doing. If there is ever anything you want done differently to better ensure your satisfaction, please don’t hesitate to let us know! We value your feedback and will promptly address any concerns.

• Hire A Maid believes in giving back to the community and since 2008, has donated over $20,000 in cleanings to people undergoing cancer treatment to help them focus on their recovery while we take care of their home cleaning.
