replacing and refinishing oak flooring
We had a flood in our kitchen/familyroom in July 2012. We had to replace all the hardwood flooring. A person we know used this company because of the particular finish they do called "Formula 1 Ceramic Wear Max". It is supposed to be more durable and scratch less. Our insurance would not cover the entire cost so we decided to pay the extra. Two fellows did the installation and it looked great. Then the crew showed up to sand and apply the finish. It looked good but it was apparent that they had not put on the number of required applications so my husband asked them to please put on one more. They complied.
After my appliances were moved back in ( the moving company did a perfect job) either the cleaning crew that came or the cabinet painters moved my fridge I don't know who but I was left with very deep and very long grooves on both sides of the fridge. Guy who owns the company was away on holiday ( this is in Sept). We asked if the person who had taken over while he was away could come and at least look at it. We were told it would have to wait until his return in a couple of weeks. We weren't happy but what can you do. Just before his arrival home his crew did call and came over to look at it. They explained how it could be fixed and Guy would be in touch upon his return. Hooray we were relieved. I received a call from Guy and he told me when he would be available to look at it. I organized my schedule accordingly. I received a phone call around 11:30 am ( our meeting was at 11:00) saying they were a little late but they had some difficulty with this job in the UBC area and would be on there way as soon as they loaded up the equipment. I waited and by 3:00 I called only to go to voicemail. I called again at 4:00. My calls were returned at 5:00. Oh sorry we still had to stay. That was fine but to not call let me know was rude. He did apologized and told me to name any time the next day and he will be there. I said 8:30 am . By 9:00 I called and was told they were on the Lions Gate bridge. I live 10 mins from the bridge. Guy did not arrive for another 30 min. I began to have a bad feeling. He walked in looked at the floor and told me that you can only see the dents in certain lighting and I should not do anything. That process took him 8 mins. I said that was not acceptable and untrue. They were very visible. I was then told that they could sand the grooves and then fill the area and then do a coat over the entire floor( kitchen and family room) it would not be perfect but 90%.I said great when could you do it. I was told they would have time after Nov 2nd. The quote came and it was $1800.00. We agreed to it even though it was very high. I sent an email telling Guy what dates would work and what times would not. I then received an email offering Oct 31st. A little impractical due to halloween. Followed with the one date I said wouldn't work due to carpet installation. At this point I will admit to being annoyed and asked why he picked the dates I had stated would not work. This combined with not showing up and being late lead me to believe that was never any intention to do the work. Which was basicaally the reply I received. Due to the fact that I was angry at this point there would be no satisfying me therefore they won't do it. Wow. My husband and I called other hardwood floor companys. They will not use this type of finish because it is hard to work with and can be very unforgiving. Not to mention expensive.Of course we are stuck no one will touch it unless they can remove the expensive and unforgiving finish. It looks like we live with the dents or redo the whole thing. At this point we are getting quotes to remove the finish. The only other thing we have learned is it is quite toxic to work with. So do your due diligence before considering this finish. Check with other companies as to why there are very very few doing this application. Also don't expect any follow up from this company. Once your floor is done so are they.
