Chimney Cleaning Service

I purchased a Groupon (my first mistake) for Chimney Cleaning from these guys. After calling multiple times all day to get an ETA, I finally was contacted at 4:00pm to let me know they were running late. At 7:00pm, a voice message was sent to me (they didn't have the class to call me and talk directly) telling me they weren't coming. I took an entire day off work to wait around for these guys to come by, and they didn't show. Save yourself the time and money and DO NOT buy any group deals from this company. They clearly do not have the capacity to deliver the services they promise. I have promptly written Groupon for a refund because there is no way I would ever trust a company like this to do anything for me in the future.

Chimney fix

What a disaster. Terrible experience. Was booked more than two weeks in advance because was told project would talk all day. Person never showed up. I had to call to find out where he was. Found out that they tried to squeeze someone in ahead of me, that project was taking longer than expected and he was now delayed, but would be there soon.
Wait, what? I was booked for the whole day. Why was someone squeezed in, no matter how quick the job was anticipated to be? Four different people I spoke to couldn’t give a reason why this happened. Lack of organization.
I had to call twice to find out the status of the situation. Home Pro didn’t call me to advise me of the situation. Lack of responsibility.
Got a call at 3 p.m. to say the worker’s car broke down – an excuse I refuse to believe as it would be unfeasible to finish the job that day with declining available sunlight. They tried to say he would be there now if the car didn’t break down. But if he hadn’t gone to the other job in the first place, we wouldn’t be in this situation. Lack of ability to control problem, and honesty.
When asked how they would make this right, “manager” Scott had no answer. He said, “We’ll do a good job.” Well, I expected that anyway – and anyone else is capable of doing “a good job.” What makes your service special? What value are you going to add to my experience? “We’re not going to knock down the price, if that’s what you’re looking for,” he said. I wasn’t necessarily, but I wanted to know “what are you going to do to keep my business.” He offered to get someone in the next day. Not good enough. You are still late, despite promises earlier to get the job done that day. You could have called in someone else to do the job, pulled someone else off a project and got them to my house. They refused – and offered no solutions. Lack of management, leadership.
After the job was finally done, Home Pro left a mess on my mutual driveway, so then I had my neighbour asking why there are broken chunks of concrete and brick on the driveway (she nearly rolled her ankle stepping on a piece that night). I called to ask why it wasn't cleaned up, Brandy said it wasn't in the contract. Excuse me? It had to be spelled out in the contract that you would clean up? Yes, said Brandy. I was promised a "good job" to make up for earlier mistakes – this wasn’t a good job. After some debate, she relented and said she would get someone to clean it up.
And the incorrect amount was charged to me. The amount charged to my credit card was different that what was listed on the contract. Carelessness and lack of oversight.
Again, I had to call and get that fixed (which, by the way, I am still waiting for it to be fixed). Unbelievable.
There was no customer service of any kind. No restitution, no offers to make the situation right, nothing that satisfied me to ever again retain their services.
The unprofessionalism, unwillingness to accept responsibility, carelessness, flippant, nonchalant attitude, lack of organization, leadership, management and awareness to the needs of a customer was not only mind-boggling, but not what any customer should expect from any business that wishes to be taken seriously.

Chimney Cleaning

Had a Chimney cleaning on Oct 31, rainy day and a technician showed up saying the regular guy called in sick that day so he was taking over. They new it was a TeamBuy certificate I had purchased and their supposed $200.00 cleaning only cost me 40 bucks. However, thats not the point. He said my chimney looked very dirty yet was completely done within 25 minutes and that was from the time the van arrived, to setting up the ladders to checking out the roof and inspecting the eaves and "thoroughly" examining the second chimney , along with 10 minutes of telling me I needed some tuck pointing done and an eavestrough cleaned. So being generous there was about 10 minutes (maximum) focused on the job I called them for.

Additionally, they did not bring a brush to clean the fireplace and asked if I had a broom or dust brush to borrow, I am pretty sure this is an item that is important to their job. There were no photos taken of mine to show me like I read in one other comment as I would have loved to see it, I had a fire the night after they cleaned in and opened the flu which was still caked with soot, I had to scrap it off myself.

I called the next day to let them know of my dissatisfaction and received a call back from Scott who was not helpful in the least and really didn't seem to care that I had an issue, all he said was chimney cleanings are fast. Didn't offer to have someone check out the work that was done, he didn't offer any sort of solution other than he will look into why they didn't show up with the proper tools. Well, I never heard back and there was no response to an email I sent so again, horrible customer service. Not exactly sure what level Scott as he does not tell you but if he is in any sort of management position it sure doesn't show.

What could this company do to improve their services?
Show better pride in their work and take complaints and concerns seriously.
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Call a professional Chimney sweep, I used one for years and he was fantastic, he retired 2 years ago so this was my first venture from that.

Roofing service

I ordered chimney cleaning from a Groupon promotion. Got upsold on some chimney repair work. The day scheduled for the work was Tues Oct 30 2012, predicted to be cold, rainy, and unsuitable for quality roofing work which would last. Late last week I called to find out what the weather policy was, and received no specific answer. Monday by noon no one had contacted me about whether or not anyone would be attempting to work in the rain, or when it would be rescheduled, etc. At this point I decided to call and cancel as this company simply could not be trusted to be up on my roof. Scott called back, and without saying a word about the status of the appointment for tomorrow, instead asked what he could do for me. I asked why no one had contacted me and there was no explanation. I asked why I should trust a company that would do roofing work under poor conditions rather than reschedule and Scott said the whole office was laughing at this call. Haha. Suffice it to say that the 40% deposit was completely non-refundable. Check the homepro thread on redflagforums before you sign. I wish I had.

Roof inspection & maintenance

I used roof inspection and exterior service maintenance package through Groupon. On the first inspection day, a technician shows up 1.5 hours into their 9-12 3 hour window to clean eves? Maybe a communication breakdown? Anyways, he checks Groupon and moves onto a roof inspection. I mention him my two areas of concerns, unleveled area of eves and small leak of water near a particular roof vent. He comes down in less than 15 minutes, and mentions that there is no issue around the vent but quotes some additional roof maintenance work as well as leveling and re-securing of eves. I agree to additional work and pay some deposit, thinking he is going to continue working, but the technician disappears? I call office right away to find out that I had to be booked for another service a week later. Another communication breakdown here… I wish they value our time trying to be home more seriously. On maintenance day, I ask a new technical to pay close attention to the “suspect” roof vent as well as the “quoted” unleveled area of eves as I had to go to work. He completes his work and leaves with some before and after pictures to my wife that I have asked for. I come home and I see unleveled are of eves untouched… Also, still no issue reported around the “suspected” roof vent. I initiate a return for a technician to address eves to be leveled properly, and a reception warns me about $125 charge may apply as this is going to be a warranty service. How can it be a warranty service when the work wasn’t even done to begin with? Another new technician comes, now in two weeks to check out eves. He actually did some good work, as best as he could to address our issues. Thank you. Next day, heavy rain comes down and I find an actual water leak near the “suspected” roof vent. If they are a real technician and really paid attention to what I was asking, shouldn’t they have caught the issue at inspection or during roof maintenance? So I try to initiate another “warranty” call, but all I can get now is an estimate, which takes another week to be even quoted… I called another service provider, got a service appointment ready in two days, a technician arrives right on time as promised, he spots an issue within 5 minutes, and replacement of roof vent and surrounding singles were done in 45 minutes. In conclusion, communication within their office is terrible and sub-per customer service in general. Home Pro is OK for eves, but never again for roofs.

Company Response

Fumippu, We are disapointed to hear of your not completely happt with the company. To address your first point raised, your given appointment time of 9-12 is a window of arrival time. This is not a guranteed start time of 9am as we have to leave time for travel and time to pick up materials. We planned to come out and finish the work on a seperate day so we could send an advanced more experienced technician. Th service charge you were warned about is company policy, if the problem that we are being called out for has nothing to do with what was in the contract/ any of the work we have done then you are just paying to have the technician there. You would not be issued another warranty for your vent because it was not in the contract.

I'm updating an earlier review because of what I discovered after it.
Let me start by saying the chimney cleaning service itself was good. But the amount of upselling an unnecessary incremental repairs Home Pro recommended to me makes me want to caution others about them. Joel told me that both my chimney was sinking and breaking apart, and was an immediate hazard to anyone on my property. Plus, my eavestroughs needed to be re-aligned because they were filled with "200 lbs of water" that would come crashing down in the winter from the weight of the resulting ice. The sales tactics for the extra work required on my roof were a bit heavy handed from head office. They originally provided a quote that was ridiculously high for the extra work, and when I said no thanks because I would want to do some research and get extra quotes, they kept coming down in price, eventually offering me a price less than 50% of the original price as a one time, never again bargain. I said no, and had the extra work recommended by Home Pro looked at by others over the next weeks. The chimney was indeed in need of replacement, but a brick mason told me it was not sinking, and so he rebuilt it the following spring for me along with other brick work around the house. And the eavestroughs were indeed clogged, but only because there was an obstruction in the downspout. A contractor I had over to look at it, kindly pulled the sponge-like material out of the downspout for me, and I heard all the water gush down. He said there was nothing really wrong with the alignment of my eavestroughs, and apart from aesthetics and age, they are fine.
For this reason, I am really disappointed with Home Pro, and will never use them again. Based on the other reviews here though, looks like I am in the majority.

I purchased a promotional deal threw the company for a chimney cleaning. Everything was good. The cleaner showed up a little late but he was very proffesional and helpful and he answered all my questions. I would for sure use them again espically if they have more promotional deals out.
