Deck Construction

Rob was recommended to us to build our large entertainment deck (1800 Square Feet).
The first stage (1200 Square Feet) is complete and Rob and his crew will be coming back to complete the remaining section this summer.
Before starting the deck we obtained a number of quotations from different contractors.
Why did we choose Rob?
He made three visits to our home and spent many un-hurried hours with us discussing plans and giving us ideas.
It was obvious that his knowledge of deck building was superior to anyone else that we had met.
His quote was detailed and comprehensive and easy to understand.
How successful was the project?
My wife and I are absolutely delighted with the results.
The workmanship is exceptional – Rob went out of his way to make sure things were done right. He is a true craftsman that takes immense pride in his work – even taking time to hand select the material (cedar) used for the construction.
Rob also made a tremendous effort to accommodate our time lines – we wanted the first stage of the project finished in time for our son’s engagement party – Rob and his crew worked long days, weekends and even went to the trouble of re-arranging his holiday to meet the deadline. The 150 people that attended the engagement party were extremely impressed with the look and construction of the deck.
Rob is an honest upright old world craftsman who keeps to his quote and word. I would recommend him and his team without hesitation. If you want carpentry done that you will be delighted with – choose Rob - you will not be sorry.

Front Porch and stairs

Anyone looking for good value, trustworthy and real craftsmanship should give Robert a call.

When we decided to re-do our front porch and stairs we got 4 quotes. Robert was the wild card and we found him off of this website.

All four quotes were within the same range. 3 contractors said that they could get it done in less than five days and provided us with a beautiful quote and spent approximately 15 minutes with us going over the scope of the project. Robert did not.

Robert spent over an hour at our first meeting discussing options and different type of wood. He then gave us a verbal ball park quote and told us he needed 10 days to complete. We were surprised and asked why he needed twice as long as the others. His response: he personally does all the work himself (with his brother in law) and personally goes and hand picks each and every piece of wood.
Following that, I asked him twice for a quote... he repeated his verbal quote.. I pushed really hard for him to drop off a quote.. he eventually dropped off a brief written quote.

I was a bit skeptical but, my husband really pushed for him.... we hired him.

Okay, he's not the best at producing quotes.. but, he is EXCEPTIONAL at what he does... his price never went up and he was done in exactly 10 days. The workmanship is in a league of his own... we went with all cedar and epi wood... he hand selected beautiful pieces... his precision and finishing is a true art...

He was very neat and courteous with the neighbours... our dog loved him.

I am very really, really hoping that he will come back this winter and do our base boards....

Do yourselves a favour... go with Robert... let him have the extra days he asks for... and don't let his late quote scare you off... he'll honour his verbal quote.

He is honest, collaborative, skilled, an artist and a great guy. You won't be disappointed... and your neighbours will all ask you for his name & number....

Front Porch

After my first contractor went AWOL, I found Rob on homestars to come and complete my front porch.
He was honest, polite, did a great job for a fair price, and the work was done on time. I would definitely call him again in the future and recommend him to my friends and neighbours.

Closed in Front Porch

We decided that we needed to close in our 15'x7' front porch in order to create a "front hall" type of space for our recently purchased, 1920s, Queen East home. It was important to us to have this done prior to winter to keep our hardwood floors safe from wet boots.

After some research we decided to ask Rob Morrow of Carmor Construction to provide us with a quote. We didn't look any further. Rob's forthright manner, practical advice and apparent experience made it a no brainer.
Rob and his team completed the job within two weeks as promised.

Through the whole process, a number of things impressed us:

1. Rob's expertise was apparent from the outset. He provided us with design suggestions that were not only sensitive to the look/style of our house and neighbourhood, but also within our budget. Moreover, he was a clear and effective communicator.
2. During construction, the work area was always swept clean, off-cuts were sorted and piled to one side, and tools were stacked on pads to keep them from scratching the floor. We always came home to a tidy worksite.
3. The construction was completed on time and the neighbours are now complimenting us on how it looks!

Overall, we are very happy with the finished product and can't wait to paint the wood in the spring! Carmor construction will be our first choice for any future renovations.

Backyard Fence

We needed to enclose our backyard with a 50ft fence because our new puppy was about to arrive. We invited Rob Morrell to our home to give us a quote and we immediately knew that he was the right man for the job. Rob was very professional, friendly and honest and we could tell that with all of his experience, he knew what he was talking about. Rob and his crew did a fantastic job building a very secure fence in a timely fashion. Our backyard looks great and now our puppy can roam around freely.

To create an analogy for you, if it was a playoff hockey game that was a must-win, Rob would be that solid, stay-at-home defenceman that I would want on the ice for the final five minutes to secure the win.

Rebuilt back deck; installed vinyl siding; replaced windows

We already knew Rob was a great contractor after he built our front porch, so we he was the first one we called when we wanted to rebuild our back deck, replace some older windows with energy efficient ones, and to replace the wood siding of our home with vinyl.

Rob was a professional throughout. He provided valuable advice on material options, and offered suggestions on design to address various issues that creep up during major work.

We would recommend Rob to anyone without reservation.

Front porch reno, railing, fence, gates, arbor + Victorian screen door

We knew Rob was reliable when, after our first meeting, he went and found us a wooden Victorian screen door that we had been looking for everywhere. He went and bought it for us, because he knew exactly where to get the style we wanted, even knowing we may end up using someone else for the carpentry project. We hadn't signed a contract or given him any money. He just did it because he could help us. His quote for the rest of our project was very reasonable and he was able to do the project within our timelines (Spring 2010).
Rob helped us remodel our front porch and design and build an arbor around a wheelchair lift which we had donated to us (it is a bit rusty and not too pretty). The arbor really hides the lift nicely with safety gates at the top and bottom that match the wood work around our new fence and porch. The lattice work is just lovely. The old metal railings and bannisters on the porch were replaced with lovely wood which Rob helped design and plan. He designed a pretty front lawn picket fence that matched the rest of the project nicely. He had some great design ideas! Our little fence protects our property from doggie doo and the garbage that tends to blow onto our lawn as we are on a busy windy street. Little details were added to make the whole project "pretty".
As well, Rob understood our desire to make our porch safe for our beloved 17 year old cat to roam around. He made sure that there was no way she could fit through the balusters or under the railings or gates. He genuinely cared enough about this part of the project because he knew it was important to us. Rob is very nice guy.
He was very helpful in terms of recommending the type of wood we needed for each part of the project. We had more economical options but Rob always explained the benefits to using better wood. He never pressured us to spend more than we wanted to. In fact he outlines exactly how much more it would be to make upgrades. He also told us places we could save money. We wanted the look of the woodwork to have a traditional beach house feel to it, knowing we would be painting it white eventually. Rob was great at giving advice about painting. He said we can save money by doing the painting ourselves (he told us exactly what to use for paint) and made sure to tell us not to paint until next summer after the wood has cured.
Rob was also very patient as we mulled over certain design options and looked at our budget. His assistant was very nice and obviously skilled. Rob knows we have more that we want to do with the house when we have it in our budget. He helped us plan what part of the project might come next.
Rob is a very skilled and down to earth carpenter. He'll show you pictures of his work and you won't have a problem finding happy customers in his resume.

Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Rob knows how to plan for projects that aren't "typical", such as our porch-lift. He's got the experience.

basement renovation

Our project included insulating outside wall of cellar and drywall, suspended ceiling, electrical, subfloor with engineered hardwood flooring, a wall of doors giving access to storage, a ceramic tile floor in laundry room and the moving of 4 appliances. Robert was very knowledgeable and gave excellent suggestions for products. His work was very skillful with nothing too much trouble. It seems there is nothing he and his helper can't do and do well. He encouraged getting any and all necessary permits in our case this refers to electrical. As he said, he has nothing to hide and wanted us to be protected. Rob is someone who can be trusted without reservation. Also his pricing is fair and transparent i.e. he shows you what he actually pays for supplied materials. Finally, we liked that once he started our project we were his only project till completion. He came reliably every day M-F till the last detail was finished. We got his name from Homestars and have not been disappointed in the slightest.

Stripping of woodwork in century old home

We had a disastrous experience with a Toronto based painter who had been stripping the paint (including lead paint) off the woodwork on the second floor of our home. He abandoned us and left the job half done, causing us to lose valuable time and money. Luckily we found Rob. He stepped in and for a remarkably competitive price, completed the job. He was knowledgeable, reliable, pleasant and very professional. He and his team worked hard over several weekends in order to complete the job and help get us back on track. It was very much appreciated and we would recommend Rob in an instant.

Installation of Baseboards and miscellaneous carpentry

I had Rob from Carmor come in and install all of the baseboards in my century home. He was working with 8-inch and 10-inch baseboards in a old house with no square corners, and did a fabulous job.

While the work was superb, the real value added was the "consulting". Rob had great tips on how to save me some money and problem solve some other aspects of my renovation.
