Attic insulation

The cellulose insulation increased the R rating from 8 to 50 plus. The work crew arrived on time, lay down protective floor and stair matting, and then pumped the cellulose insulation into the attic. This was Followed by post installation clean up. While the square footage seemed about 50 square feet above other estimates I had received(800 vs 850 sq ft), this did not effect the cost as 800 falls within the same cost band as 850 sq feet. The subsequent energy audit confirmed the R rating had increased above 50. I am pleased with the work carried out via this company and the use of a natural insulation product. I recommend Foam Comfort Inc.

Complete House Insulation: Exterior Walls, Cathedral ceiling, Flat Roof

I have used Foam Comfort on 3 occasions in my house. The first time they did the main floor of my home - formerly plaster and lathe, I required a 1.5 inch skim coat to get an air seal and minimal R-value. Scheduling was no hassle, and the workers showed up on time. They only billed me after I called and expressed approval. I did not know at the time, but I also could have asked them to come back and clean up the scarfing a bit more which would have made drywall installation much easier. In later projects I expressed this concern, and the offer was extended.

2nd occasion was to do a flat roof and skim coat on half of my upstairs; again, very prompt and reliable. The scarfing job here was also very good - no problems with drywall installation.

3rd occasion was a large cathedral ceiling. We had some disagreements on the measurements (and therefore the quote). They spent a great deal of time with me discussing their dimensions and even came back to re-measure. While we never fully agreed, they made a final offer which I accepted. Frankly, it's completely their business to quote me whatever they want, whether I agree with their assessment of the level of effort or not; so, I appreciated that they took the time to explain their side of the story. They also missed a spot, but immediately sent out a truck to remedy the situation.

There was a chance to do another much smaller project, but I think they must have a minimum charge, as it worked out to be completely incomparable, financially, to the batting alternative. Again, charging a minimum is totally their right, but given the history, I had hoped for a deal.

In summary: I find Foam Comfort to be very reliable and professional and the results have been great. Don't be afraid to call back and express concerns about the job, because they will respond appropriately. Foam is a good solution in situations where you don't have much stud space, but it is not cheap so budget properly; and, if possible, do bulk rather than piecemeal.

Company Response

Thank you for taking the time to write such a thorough review. Because of the technical nature of the foam application we always offer better rates based on volume, as do most businesses. For this reason we have a minimum charge and sometimes that is a disincentive for customers but necessary for us in order to stay in business. Generally with repeat customers we would waive or reduce the minimum so I am not sure what happened in this case.

At Foam Comfort we take pride in our work and hope to offer a perfect job everytime, however, due to the nature of the work, the weather conditions, the age and variety of houses (no two houses are ever the same...) we sometimes are required to return and touch-up a job. For this reason it is company policy to follow up on each and every job to ensure complete satisfaction. We will gladly return to "make it right" and these returns are scheduled promptly and conveniently. We thank you for your understanding and cooperation in regards to th return visit.

We hope that you (and/or) your customers will be "Foam Comfortable" as a result of the work recently completed.

Attic insulation

I won't bore you with the poor customer service and communication issues. eMail me if you want those gory details.

Foam Comfort blows in insulation into the attic and bills based on square footage of the attic. Both my final invoice and that of a neighbour who put us on to Foam Comfort were inflated and I surmise, many others too. Their calculation of square footage of the attic was larger than that of the outside dimensions of the houses! The invoice was inflated by 25%!

Jen the Owner/Manager would not let me discuss the measurements nor the other issue they failed us on, with the Installation Foreman. She also had the audacity to suggest that if he came back to remeasure and his calculations accurate we would incur a service charge/penalty. That after I told her that his measurements were far larger than the OUTSIDE brick measurements! Classic rip-off artists - assuming homeowners don't check up on the supplier's work.

April 28: CONSUMER'S RESPONSE TO COMPANY RESPONSE BELOW:

I measured the INSIDE of my attic and the calculation was 25% less than what they attempted to bill me. Her comment about overhang of soffits while correct that that measurement is greater than outside wall dimensions does/did not add up to what they tried to bill me.

Jennifer wrote: "Because we insulate properly, and this area is a leaky part of the house, we ensure that the soffits are venting properly but are still insulated" - THIS is an issue that made my blood boil after I learned they covered over the soffit vents! I indicated to Jennifer that I wanted to speak with the installer about installing baffles over the vented parts of the soffit, as I might do it myself depending on what baffles the installer uses/has access to - a CRITICAL component to the job to reduce the chance of ice dams in winter. He didn't call me and just COVERED the soffit vents!!So there is NO venting coming from the soffits and I will now have to go up, push back the insulation and install baffles myself. So for her to declare that "we ensure that the soffits are venting properly but are still insulated" is, in my case, COMPLETELY false.

Even if she responds now that she BELIEVED that I would install the baffles on my own, why would they COVER the soffit vents and claim the soffits are venting properly!!! Answer that one Foam Comfort!

Again, I am happy to communicate with anyone directly who wants to discuss their potential insulation project but HIGHLY recommend you avoid Foam Comfort Inc and their dishonest business practices.

The truth is that the attic is larger than the outside walls as there is approximately 1' soffit area that extends the perimeter of the house so for a 1200 sq ft footprint that is an additional 140 sq feet. Because we insulate properly, and this area is a leaky part of the house, we ensure that the soffits are venting properly but are still insulated. All estimates are emailed to homeowners and within it is indicated that attics are billed accordingly and the customer receives all terms and conditions prior to scheduling to have the work done.

insulation of attic and all headers on all floors

After the initial inspection of our total renovation we decided to use Foam Comfort. The result was exceptional. The foam was installed in areas for example between each header joist in the basement, and second floor. The house has 2 large dormers with no attic space, the foam was also placed between the joists which resulted in a higher R value. The installation was fast with minimal cleanup and does not require a vapour barrier before drywall is installed.

Insulation of external wall

After an initial inspection and estimate, we were informed that removal of debris was included in the process, if not the price, and that it might be an extra $100 or so. They were 20 minutes from the end of the project, and we were informed that the labourer they had working was unable to finish because of debris. even HE said he would do it. but they made us call unskilled labourers who showed up drunk and unable to do it, so what were we supposed to do? we could not get the debris out, so had to go back to them, and they charged us over $250.00 to do something they should have done in the first place as it is part of their installation, and they have people comfortable crawling into tight spaces. basically a terribly run business, and they bend you over a barrel before they charge you up the yin yang for work that should be included.
go elsewhere.

Just to set the story straight.
a. Gave quote for spray foam insulation only. Estimator looked in the space but did not go completely under to the far side of the crawlspace and it was too dark to have complete visibility.
b. Installer showed up to do the work as scheduled. Once inside he did as much of the job as was possible but there was debris impeding his way. We could have easily left at this point and not completed the job and the homeowner would never have known and would not have had to pay $250 to clear out the space. But because we take pride in our work and we wanted to complete the job properly. In order to properly complete the job the debris needed to be removed. As we had booked another job our crew had to move on. We advised the homeowner that once cleared out we would complete. We would not charge any additional even though we would have to return.
c. Asked customer to call us once cleared out. They could not arrange and asked for my help.
d. Gave them a number for labour link to arrange for clearing out OR suggested they look in the local paper under "handyman services".
(we are spray foam insulators not general contractors and therefore are not insured with WSIB for other work AND our rates would be higher than general labour and I was trying to save the customer $.
e. Labour that they hired could not do it or likely felt that the rate he was being paid to clear the space was not worth it. Keep in mind that the space is very small and contained dead animals, rotting material, wood, garbage, rocks etc.
f. When the customer could not get anyone else to do it we agreed. $250 is not unreasonable for this work. Homeowner had the option to do it themselves or arrange for someone cheaper to do it. Evidently those options did not work out - again, not our fault.
g. I did my best to complete this job. It would have been much easier for me to walk away as it was not a money maker given the return trips and trying to schedule additional work that was the homeowner's responsibility.
Unfortunate that you were not happy about spending $250 to clear out the space but hopefully the increased warmth and comfort in your home has made it worthwhile.

We are not in business of ripping people off and this is why we suggested that the area be properly cleared out so we could completely seal it off and do the job right.

Insulation

I should have known that availability at short notice wasn't necessarily a good sign.

My house was used as a lesson for new installers, and it showed. Very patchy installation & expectations around coverage of product was not accurate to the finished product.
Safety for household inhabitants was not explained, nor verified that everyone was out of the house before installation of toxic chemicals started.
Very rushed to get started, absolutely no professional curtsy around times of install, or notifications.

I was surprised and disappointed that such a polluting truck was outside churning out noxious fumes during the install.

Not sure how you thought the spray foam would be installed but a truck is required. Our trucks all run on biodiesel in our bid to cause the least amount of pollution possible. The benefit of the spray foam insulation is that it reduces greenhouse gas emissions from the burning of fossil fuels in your furnace but there is some diesel required in the application process. If there were a spray foam fairy that could apply this with no gas I would be even happier than you.

As for you comment about not being warned about being out of the house, this is not the case. We notify a)on all estimates and b) on booking confirmations by email. If you are receiving the email you will be fully informed. In addition we advise homeowners as how to best prepare for the process and the length of time expected.

Like all businesses we have new employees. The only way to train them is on the job. There is no spray foam academy or training facilities. Trainees only work under the authority of a CUFCA licensed installer to ensure that your job meets the application requirements. The nature of spray foam insulation is that it is hand applied and will not be even textured. Thermal barriers are to be placed over spray foam anyway (by code) so not sure why appearance is important as long as the required R value is installed.

Most homeowners appreciate availability on short notice as when they require an installation on short notice it is usually due to a lack of planning on their part. We make a point of being available as this is the whole point of being in business. We work hard in the office to accomodate the date requested.

Spray foam insulation in ceilings

I had spray foam insulation installed in the upper most ceilings (peaked and flat roof) of my Leslieville semi. Overall, I was extremely pleased with the informative, polite, and prompt service from Foam Comfort. They fit me into their schedule and answered all my questions. The work was done on time and as scheduled.

Because I'm a new owner, I can't say what difference the spray foam has made to my heating bills, but the work done by Foam Comfort was well executed. Aside from some foam bits left on the walls around the ceiling - they worked very clean.

Insulating stick-frame loft area in ICF Home

We were building a high efficiency home and had used ICF for all the walls right up to the loft area. As a portion of the roof, it had to be built in a more traditional stick-frame manner, but we wanted to make sure the walls had a high insulation rating both because this was the highest point in the house (where heat would collect) and to make sure it was just as comfortable as our R50 ICF walls.

Foam Comfort were really great to work with and came back on short notice to add insulation to one extra wall that we had to skip on their first visit (long story). Really nice staff and they did a great job.
