Running phone and data lines for small office reno

Crown Electric ran 4 new data and phone lines from our server to our new sales area as part of a small renovation project we just completed. George and Andrew were very professional and provided quality work as outlined by our IT person. Their work caused minimal distraction to our ongoing operation, they were polite, courteous, and they cleaned up after themselves.
We would use and would refer them to others.

Over charged for a poor service on a simple job

I called Crown Electric to change an exterior dead light bulb which I could not reach because of the hight. They sent two people for this simple job and charged me $220. The job did not need two people. Three weeks later the same light would not come on. I called them and the guy gave me a bunch of non-sense about how bulb manufacturer do not provide guarantee on their products anymore. Interestingly, the Crown Electric supplied the light bulb. So, if it was of low quality it was their mistake. In fact, I am not sure if the light is dead or they did not install it properly. My experience is that they charge a lot for a poor job. Stay away from them.

Company Response

Mr. Shahram is incorrect about many of the points he has provided. He called us in October, 2015 and we completed the work on October 13, 2015 which was 3 months later and not 3 weeks later as he states, we did send 2 people as after discussing the work we required an extension ladder to reach as the work was at a high level. Whether we sent 1 or 2 people makes no difference as the minimum cost of our service call is a 2hour call out. Mr. Shahram did not have the lamps that were required and we had to check what type they were and then go to the nearest big box store to purchase them to keep the costs down. Yes, Mr. Shahram has no warranty for the incandescent lamps purchased from the store. The invoice was less than $220 as stated and $25 of that was for taxes. I also told Mr. Shahram that he should purchase long lasting LED lamps and replace all the high ones that cannot be reached to avoid having to repeatedly replace incandescent lamps. Thank you Crown Electric Ltd.

Electrical Fix - blown breaker panel

Jason and his "helper/apprentice" attended in February to repair my breaker panel, as half of it had blown. They did not provide an estimate and I had to pay for the helper to basically stand and watch and wait for hydro to come. They left me without power and said I had to wait for the "inspector" to come - I called Hydro who said they were waiting to here from Crown. Not too impressed to be given a bill for almost $900. and with 2.5 hours for the apprentices' time.....Use with caution. I asked for an amount up front, and was not told. I felt like I was held hostage. I called to ask about it but was told this was usual practice.

Company Response

I am sorry to hear that you felt that you had a bad experience when we came to your home for electrical repairs. We discussed the possibilities of the problem and a service truck that was available was sent to you. Our service call and labour rates were explained at the time, when our service truck arrived it was discovered the main breaker was burnt up. The procedures to make the repairs, which all electrical contractors would follow was explained. The utility was contacted to disconnect the power which they responded to quite quickly. The Electrical Safety Authority was called and an inspection was taken, when the work is completed the ESA inspector is called, which we did, the inspector then calls the utility to issue a connection order which they obviously did, the utility responded in a timely manner to re-connect the power, our serviceman is required to remain on site for the utility to arrive to check for power at the main breaker and to test. The cost was more than fair, especially considering the cost of the obsolete main breaker which we stock on board. The labour portion was only $325.00 plus HST and the rest was the cost of the permit plus taxes. I am hoping that this explanation regarding the cost and the time spent on site for completion of this job meets your satisfaction and please note that Crown Electric Ltd. strives to give good customer service and quality electrical work to all of its customers.

Emergency electrical repair

We are so thankful for John! We had an emergency repair of a burning outlet and not only did he take the time to go over the electrical system of them home, but he explained everything to us as he went. He also spent time with recommendations for future work that is needed and gave us some "homework" to do (mapping out our circuits). Thanks so much! I feel like I know so much more about electrics. We will definitely call you to do the aluminium tune up and panel change that we want to do. Much appreciation.

Change the lighting in my house to pot lighting.

When I moved into my house all the lights were hanging and obtrusive, so i called Crown Electric Ltd. and they came and switched the lighting to suit my taste. The living room is now only pot lights, as well as the dining room. Everything was done professionally, and they did not leave a mess for me to clean. Great company, with great service, and kind workers.

Underestimated cost to win a job falsely

I called crown electric. I told them that I needed to do two things. I had to install a ceiling fan in my basement bathroom. There was not one when the previous owner put in the bathroom. I told them that it was adjacent to an exterior wall but a hole would have to be put in. I said I would pick up the fan and the vent for the wall and I did.

I also needed a floor heating system hooked up. I told them they needed to fish the wire 8 feet along an exterior basement wall. A previous electrician had done it in 20 minutes. I needed to hook up a new circuit in the box. The phone guy, George, said two hours at for one guy at $80/hour. He said I needed a permit for the changes for the ceiling fan, I doubted him and told him that I would call ESA. I called ESA and they confirmed the need for the permit. He called Tuesday and said he that he had the $71 permit and his guy should be done in 2 hours.

The GUYS should up at 9:10, 40 minutes late, 2 of them. As they guy was going back to his shop to get the drill, he said it would be 4 hours for 2 Guys. I told him to have his boss call me. He did not. At 12:15, they finished the drilling and had nothing hooked up, they said they would not be done for a while.

They said the job would be 4 hours each at $80/each for 2 guys. So the job went from $160 to $640. The job was not nearly done 3 hours in. They forgot their equipment. When I called to dispute the quote he said I told him nothing of the hole in the wall, nothing of the need to fish wire. I told him that I would kick him out since he would not be running up the bill on me without end and for call me untruthful. Fine said George. He would be liening me. I would have to pay him.

Well, I might. But for everyone else out there, this is how they do business. Avoid them. I work in the industry. This site played a large part in me choosing crown. Most electricians are honest, give you honest estimates. Crown would have never would have gotten into my house with the 8 man hour estimate. He assumes that I will crumble in the face of the lien. I might have too. But when he called me a untruthful, and threatened me with the lien, their was no way they were finishing the job. You know $400 - 500 was probably the right cost for the job, and I was expecting 2 guys at 4 man hours maybe, but they were exploiting me, counting on the fact that I will crumble to their threats to force me to pay 4 times the original quote.

Do not ever deal with this company.

tune up aluminum wiring

although I cannot fault the work of the electricians, I would say the estimate that was given to us fell well short on specifics with the main emphasis on the labor rate. the cost of materials was very vague and so we ended up well over what we were quoted

new fuse panel and upgrading

George and John came to my house the same day of discovering, our electical wiring (aluminum) in our newly purchased home was "burning". George and John came over and fixed the one outlet that was smoking, and inspected the entire house for our peace of mind. They gave us a couple of opitions along with quotes to give us an idea of what was required if we wanted to upgrade our current situation. George and John were not pushy were very knowledgeable.

A few weeks later we called Crown Electric back in. George along with his crew came in and worked very hard. They fixed all the electrical outlets, switches and fixtures. They also installed a new electrical fuse panel to ease my pain of trying to find the right fuse that just burnt out....again.

Crown Electric are professional, polite, friendly, hardworking and competively priced. I would higher them again, though I don't think I have any more electrical work to be done; I would highly recommend them to everyone I know.

George, John, Colin and the rest of the crew....

Thank-you so very much.
