Basement Renovation with waterproofing

From the beginning Mike and Aldo were incredibly friendly and helpful with our basement renovation. We had a typical East end semi with unfinished basement, with uneven concrete floors and damp walls.

They were efficient from the very beginning. We decided on interior waterproofing because our concrete floor needed to be replaced it was the most cost effective. Aldo was on site managing the teams, the first crew had the concrete out and the basement dug down in three days! The crews were always very courteous and cleaned up after themselves each day. There was very little downtime and Mike and Aldo kept the trades coming back to back to keep the project running on schedule.

It was great watching the basement take shape so quickly. From a damp storage area to now an office, tv area, bathroom and laundry. Aldo and Mike were helpful providing advice and options on what can be done or materials might work along the way. We replaced our basement stairs and widened the opening, as well as had custom made doors for our (6ft clearance). We supplied a number of materials ourselves that were included in the quote, like vanity while others we wanted were more than originally budgeted (like the toilet). Mike amended the bill at the end to balance these changes. Do be aware the materials quoted are generally the low end and if you have specific tastes on things you'll want to budget more. Mike clearly laid out the exclusions/extras in the quote and a few of those did come up in our reno (old houses with surprises) but they ended up being quite reasonable. Mike was honest and trust worthy, a great contractor to work with.

We had a few minor hiccups like the levelness of the concrete floor and dust control during the fixing of the concrete floor. But Mike was quick to remedy the situation and brought people in to fix it without delaying the timeline.

The team finished the basement to concrete floor and drywall and then we installed our own vinyl flooring, painted, and trimmed out the space. Then Aldo and his team returned to install our vanity, toilet and doors. They worked with our timeline wonderfully. We also had Aldo and Tony help us put up a wall of ikea cabinets in our kitchen to help polish off our space upstairs.

Some tips for all basement renos. Take photos of everything during the many stages. It's helpful to know where things are in the walls (studs, wiring, pluming) when you're putting up cabinetry, shelves etc. Think about the final layout before starting the project. We added bracing for a wall mount tv at the framing stage and put an outlet at that level during electrical.

We love our new space and would definitely recommend Sonoma to anyone.

Basement Renovation

Mike, Aldo and all the tradesmen were organized, detailed, polite, accomodating, professional and thorough in the work performed. We got our basement finished and are extremely happy about the work performed by Mike and his team. During the process the timelines were punctual and the work area kept clean throughout. We have retired family members who were in the construction field for decades and they were also impressed by the job done from Mike and his team. We would recommend Sonoma Contracting to anyone looking to do home renovations and would also use them again going forward for upcoming renovation projects.

Thanks Mike, Aldo and the rest of the team.

Mike Flammia and his solid team of trades people did superb job!

Kitchen renos can be a headache. Fortunately, Mike Flammia and his Sonoma team held the cure. An older 50's house was in dire need of a complete kitchen makeover. We pooled our idea with Mike's and the result worked out superbly. We even threw a few curveballs at him during the project; i.e. last-minute changes. He took on and overcame those challenges. And it's not just Mike. Every single one of his trades people (tilesetters, painter, electrical team, and Mike's sidekick Tony) were professional, cooperative and a breeze to work with. From start to finish, Mike was reliable. Always on time. We never felt we had to take a backseat to another project. Before the project began, we were out-of-town and had to communicate via phone. Nothing was lost in the translation. We never felt any resistance or pressure from Mike. Same with the financial side of the deal. We trusted Mike. He trusted us. Some projects may be painful. Not this one. With Mike, it was nothing but a smooth-running, cooperative process. A suddenly beautiful kitchen was the result. We were fortunate to select Mike and his firm and we would heartily recommend him.

Finish basement / whole house renovation

Sonoma (Mike and team) was our contractor for a whole house renovation that included the main floor and upstairs (3,200 sq. ft.) and turning our unfinished basement (1,500 sq. ft.) into a work of art. We will provide details on the renovation and our experience below but to get the point quickly, Mike and his team are fantastic, we highly recommend Sonoma for your renovation project and we cannot imagine anyone better for the job.

Our renovation included finishing the basement to include laundry room (relocated from main floor), bathroom, bedroom, office, storage, playroom, and best of all sound proofing for our loud kids! Main/upstairs renovations included a kitchen remodel, mudroom, all bathrooms, hardwood throughout, all doors changed to solid wood, 100+ pot lights, ceiling fans, electrical work (wall sconces, more switches, dimmers, etc.), painted all rooms, etc.

Mike patiently took notes on our ideas, listened to us, and thankfully contributed his experience that helped us focus our renovation. He created a work schedule that allowed us to live in the house during the renovations. We have two kids under the age of 5 and were worried about noise, disruption, etc. but his team took amazing effort to make the house as comfortable as possible for our kids and his team even scheduled their lunches around our kids nap time. Needless to say we were impressed and appreciative with the amount of consideration from his team!

Sonoma helped to arrange our building drawings and worked with us through the City building permit process. Mike was also there for all City inspections to ensure our project was completed without delay. We were always informed through the process, the renovations were completed on time and on budget, and the workmanship is impressive. Mike and his team were bigger perfectionists than us, for those that know us this is no small feat.

We are 100% comfortable recommending Mike and the Sonoma team.

Basement Renovation

It was a pleasure to deal with Mike and his team.

This was my first major renovation, and I interviewed four contractors. Mike stood out immediately because of the advice he gave me (that the others did not).

Each trades person (Aldo, Tony, Paul, Marco, Alex) that Mike works with is an expert in their field, and they were all professional and approachable.

Mike was great at answering my multiple questions in a timely manner (while being very patient). I also added some items to the project which he kindly accommodated, always letting me know if there was an additional charge.

I am very pleased with the quality of the work and would highly recommend Mike and his team.

Excellent Work

We couldn't of been more satisfied. All the sub-trades were very conscientious workers who showed up on time and did excellent work. We've worked with other outfits in the past but none came close to the attention to detail and quality workmanship provided by Sonoma. Would highly recommend this company.

Basement Renovation

I had a great experience with Mike and the entire team from Sonoma. I did a full reno - underpinning, in-floor radiant heat, new HVAC, etc and the final results of the project met my (somewhat high) standards. Mike was great to deal with, always responding to emails and calls in a timely fashion, and kept the project moving despite my busy travel schedule. Most importantly, he continued to respond when I had questions or concerns, and worked through each one of them.
The quality of work done by each tradesperson: Tony (carpenter), Paul (HVAC), Marco&Mike (electrical) and Alex (painting) was top notch, and Aldo did a great job of managing the work site daily. Everyone was respectful, hard working, responsive, and took pride in their work. The end result shows the efforts.
I'll certainly be using these guys again when my next project comes up.

Basement renovation

We hired Sonoma to renovate our basement and are really pleased with the result. The work took a bit longer than expected, but that was due in part to our increasing the project scope after seeing the condition of our concrete floor. We ended up having it torn up and replaced (not our original plan, but we're so happy we did it!) along with a full renovation including plumbing for a bathroom and laundry room, wiring, moving of ductwork, new furnace and a/c, and the creation of a lovely, useable basement (in what was a cramped, depressing, damp space) with a bathroom, laundry room, utility room, family room and office. Mike listened to all of our concerns/worries and addressed them promptly, Aldo was wonderfully professional, friendly and talented, Tony did amazing, beautiful carpentry work, and all the other contractors—including Paul doing the HVAC and Marco the electrician—did fantastic work. We feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to have Sonoma build our basement space for us and would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for quality work by friendly professionals.

Basement and general contracting

There are times when you find a contractor you can trust, one who you just know will get the job done professionally, properly and with integrity. That contractor is Mike and his company, Sonoma. Two years out from the superb, complete basement reno he and his fine crew did for us, and I still can call or email him with a quick concern or question -- and he answers with as much helpfulness as possible. IF you have basement reno on the horizon or are even contemplating one, look no further than Sonoma Contracting. You won't find better.
