Electrical breaker blown because of mysterious circuit problem.

A vacuum cleaner plugged into a wall outlet resulted in shutting off a circuit breaker and knocking out a bunch of other plugs. The circuit breaker could not be reset. I called Kiya and he offered to help me for free on the phone, and when that didn't work came to me the next day and solved my problem with thoroughness. He took the trouble of testing every circuit with me present and explained everything in clear terms. I respect his honesty and devotion to honest and competent service.

Total Knob & Tube re-wiring

Frankly, if you want the job done correctly with no hassles and to work with a tradesman who is true to his word, then look no further than Kiya. If he’s more expensive, there’s a reason. This fellow is in demand!

My husband & I bought our first home with the knowledge that 20% of the wiring was knob & tube with the possibility that up to 50% could be the old stuff. The insurance company gave us 60 days conditional insurance, so we had to have it 100% gone by end of October. Kiya was very accomodating and although is very much in demand, managed to squeeze us in right away. Potential for a rush job no? But everything went according to his word and completed withint 5 days.

We read from other reviews online to that Kiya had charged around $8,000 (all incl.) to convert knob and tube in a similiar home in our neighborhood. When Kiya first came to inspect our house, he instilled confidence in us. He walked into the house & virtually knew exactly what needed to be done within 10 min. He suggested where to put switches and outlets, which made complete sense yet I would never had thought of myself.

Then, he somehow predicted that our home probably had close to 100% knob & tube wiring, but we assured him that the previous owners had had a few rooms updated & that it wouldn’t be the whole house. But Kiya is experienced. Within a couple of days, we received an email quotation detailing the work needing to be done & indeed the cost including tax was $8,000.

We did obtain a second quotation for $5500 (under the table), but they were no where near as experienced with knob & tube.

During the work, lo and behold, Kiya discovered a junction box near the electrical panel which was installed to make it appear like new wires were going into the house from the panel, when in fact they were going a short distance away. So yes, the house did have 100% knob & tube. This did not affect the original quotation at all & although more work needed to be done, they still stuck to the timeframe.

Important to note is that they clean up every day, and there was a lot of drilling & plaster dust to contend with. Don’t expect perfection, but the fact that by the time I got home at 5:30, 6:00pm, they had wrapped up & cleaned up enough mess for us to function.

We recommend Kiya unreservedly. 10/10

Replacing knob & tube wiring

Kia and his team of professionals delivered both superior service and craftsmanship to our demanding knob and tube wiring job. Our high expectations were not only met but surpassed and we truly couldn’t be happier with the end result. They were extremely fast, professional and accommodating and were able to quickly and efficiently resolve any problems or issues that arose during this complicated job. In addition to updating our wiring, Kia also installed pot lights throughout the main floor of our house. They were located exactly as we’d asked and look amazing. Thanks to Kia, our old house has been transformed into a modern oasis! Kia and his team are hands down the best in the business - I would strongly recommend him to all my friends and family as well as anyone looking for a real professional. Please feel free to contact me should you need anything additional feedback.

install electrical fixtures in bathroom

I contracted them to install 3 light fixtures in bathroom.

They did a terrible job.

They did not know how to centre the light fixtures over the vanity.

Complained to me that since there were obstruction like stud and pipe in rear, they cannot be centred.

After they finished, the work is looking terrible.

I would not recommend them.

Company Response

Dear Saif, for small jobs under $500 I usually send my helper Larry. I'm sorry you were not happy with the job, but Larry has been working for me for 2 years and he does excellent work. None of my customers have complained about him. Secondly, following the completed job you called me asking for me to personally drop off an invoice for $5gst. I offered to fax it to you, but you insisted I drop the invoice off personally. Unfortunately, I did not think this was reasonable of you to ask me this, considering the cost of gas to get to your house, my time, and the fact that it was a Sunday. Wish you happier experiences with another contractor. Sincerely, Kiya

Home rewiring (removed knob & tube & rewire)

We bought an older home in East York (approximately 80 years old) that had knob & tube wiring (with some "new" wiring in the basement and kitchen which was shoddy). Our home inspector strongly advised we get all of the wiring pulled out and redone properly for insurance and safety purposes. After reading many on-line reviews and talking with people who've had similar work done we got 4 electricians in to inspect the house and quote on the work (all of them highly rated).

3 quotes landed within about a $ 1000.00 of each other - including Kiya's. But Kiya stood out immediately. Some of the other contractors quoting were not willing to patch holes or try to preserve the original baseboards of the house.

Kiya stood out for other reasons too. After meeting him it was clear to me that he had a tremendous amount of experience with rewiring older homes (specifically with knob & tube wiring and lathe & plaster walls). He just knew what he was talking about. It was also clear that he takes his work very seriously; that he takes great pride in what he does.

Not only was he willing to patch holes and preserve all of our baseboards, but he also pointed out many issues with the layout of fixtures and switches and offered to put everything where it should be. (IE: some light switches were in the middle of a wall or so far from the doorway that they couldn't be reached, stairway switches could only be turned on from one location, lights placed in impractical locations, rooms with only one or two outlets, upper rooms with no ceiling lights, no hard-wired smoke and gas detectors, etc.). Kiya offered up a new design on the spot - which made much more sense than the one that was in place.

Additionally he placed a number of lights and outlets where there were none before (in 2 very dark closets, in the upper hallway, a second light at the far end of the main floor hallway, and one in the backyard of the house).

I'm very glad we went with Kiya and his guys. I was around for the entire week he and his crew were in to do the work. He's a perfectionist and his crew follows suit. Our house had a great many surprises once the walls were opened up - none of which fazed them. These surprises meant his crew had to work longer days - and two days beyond what was planned.

It was very difficult work to run the wiring in our house. At times 2 or 3 different approaches had to be attempted just to get a fixture exactly where we agreed it should be. They also had to cut into the attic (which was sealed) to service the upper rooms. This was messy dirty work. But they got on with all of the work without a complaint - and cleaned up the mess and sealed the ceiling back up once finished.

On one occasion we had changed our minds about the placement of a hallway fixture after they had already placed it and wired. They happily moved this without any complaint. Kiya and his crew just wouldn't quit. They didn't stop nor did they ever cut any corners. The pressed on through the weekend to get the work done in time for us to move in. Despite this extra time and effort the bill remained unchanged. We were charged exactly what we were quoted.

In summary, the entire crew were pleasant and had a great sense of humour. Their work exceeded our best hopes. They made the smallest holes possible. They cleaned up after themselves each day. All holes were patched up once done. Everything looks great and works perfectly. On a funny note, my wife and I had noted that we actually missed them once they had gone.

I don't know what else to say. It's amazing to walk through the house now. Everywhere you'd expect to need light there's light. Anywhere you'd expect or need power there is a socket. The switches are placed exactly where you'd expect them to be. Everything is at a uniform height or location at door entries yet nothing draws attention to itself. All clean and tidy and elegant.

These days it's rare to have an experience like this. If you hire Kiya you'll get someone who shows up when they say they will, who is creative and intelligent with designs and plans, who does the work exactly as agreed, and who charges no more than what was agreed upon.

I give Kiya Sunrise Electrical the highest recommendation I can give. If I ever need work done in the future I wouldn't hire anybody else.

Re-wiring ground floor, updating service from 60amps to 100amps

We had several quotes done before Kia and not one of them paid the same attention to what we wanted doing as Kia did. He made suggestions about moving light switches and adding plug sockets. He was also the only electrician who when we pointed out a faulty plug socket, actually took the time to remove the cover and right what was potentially a dangerous plug.

Kia started work on the day that he promised and did the work that he had promised, and more. We came home from work one day and he had installed the wiring (at no extra cost) for an electric smoke detector and a carbon monoxide detector in the basement and the ground floor.

He truly seemed to care about our safety overall, and would only reconnect the wiring for the stove once the drywall was back up (the voltage was very high and he was concerned we might electrocute ourselves). At no time did I ever feel bad for calling him and asking him questions or for asking him to have a look at another issue (although he picked up on most of the issues himself e.g. re-did the wiring in the garage without us asking).

Overall, Kia and his crew worked very hard to make our home feel safe to live in. I would DEFINITELY use Kia again and would (and already have) recommend him to others.

Knob & Tube rewiring

I recently purchased my first home and was required (for insurance purposes) to rewire the entire house in order to remove knob and tube wiring. Having completed my due diligence and having evaluated several quotations, I decided to contract Kiya for the job.

His reviews on Homestars were impeccable and despite being slightly more expensive than the cheapest quote, I went with my instincts and entrusted the work to Kiya.... I was not disappointed.

Kiya and his crew were simply amazing!!! Besides being expert electricians, they were extremely cordial and pleasant to be around. Not only did Kiya accomplish what he promised but he was extremely accommodating when it came to additional requests... requests which were honored at no extra charge. He was also forward thinking and took the liberty of adding extra switches and wiring to ensure that potlights could be added in the future without the need for rewiring.

Everyday, Kiya was the first to arrive and the last to leave. The entire crew worked tirelessly to ensure that the work was completed as quickly as possible, with minimal damage to walls. Any damage that was caused was cleanly patched up at the end of the job.

I have dealt with contractors in the past but never have I experienced a level of service as high as this. Kiya's integrity is impeccable and he values good business more than anything else. He understands that a satisfied customer is more important than making a quick buck.

Even after the work was completed, Kiya responded to calls promptly and returned on two occasions to resolve a minor issue with a faulty fixture.

To say that Kiya was accommodating is an understatement. To say that Kiya went above and beyond what was contractually expected would be an injustice to him. I know he did so much more.

Needless to say I have found my electrician for life!!
